Find s\'(d) and s\'(c)
For each thin lens shown in the figure, calculate the location of the image of an object that is 16.0 cm to the left of the lens. The lens material has a refractive index of 1.50, and the radii of curvature shown are only the magnitudes.

Solution

Using lensmaker\'s formula,

1/f = ( n-1) (1/R1 + 1/R2)

a)

1/f = (1.5 - 1) ( 1/10 + 1/15)

1/f = 0.5 x 0.167

f = 12 cm

Using lens equation,

1/f = 1/o + 1/i

1/12 = 1/16 + 1/i

i = 48 cm to the right from lens.

b) 1/f = (1.5 - 1) (1/10 + 0 )

f = 20 cm

using lens equation,

1/20 = 1/16 + 1/i

i = - 80 cm

80 cm left to the lens

c) 1/f = (1.5 - 1) (1/-10 + 1/-15 )

f = -12 cm

using lens equation,

1/-12 = 1/16 + 1/i

i = - 6.86 cm

6.86 cm left to the lens

d) 1/f = (1.5 - 1)(1/-10 + 1/15)

f = -60

using lens equation,

1/(-60) = 1/16 + 1/i

i = - 12.63 cm

- 12.63 cm left to the lens
