A child walks due east on the deck of a ship at 3 miles per hour. The ship is moving north at a speed of 6 miles per hour. Find the speed and direction of the child relative to the surface of the water. Speed =

Solution

Given that child moves due east and ship is moving north. construct a tringle whose hypotenuse gives the speed. And the tangent gives the direction.

Resultant speed is given by sqrt(62 + 32 ) =6.708 miles per hour.

Direction =arc tan(3/6)=26.57 degrees

Hence the child moves with a speed of 6.708 miles per hour in N 26.57 E diection.
