The following cellular ATP concentrations were measured in a bacterial culture. Based upon these data, what conclusions can you make about the way(s) this organism generates ATP? You must explain your justifications for each conclusion completely, correctly name the types of energy metabolism in this organism, and give the source of energy and the terminal electron acceptor under each experimental condition.

Assume that you have measured the ATP concentration in samples of a bacterial culture exposed to several different environmental conditions using the luciferin-luciferase assay. Based upon the following data from this experiment, draw conclusions about the types of metabolism this bacterium can use to generate ATP. Be sure to describe your reasoning for each conclusion clearly and completely.

The medium in which the cells were suspended for the experiment contained all of the possible necessary trace elements, as well as ammonium nitrate, potassium phosphate, magnesium sulfate, ferric chloride, and sodium nitrite. Initially, the medium contained no carbon source. The baseline (control) level of ATP detected when no energy sources were present was < 5 ug/mL. When the culture was illuminated in the presence of air, the ATP concentration was 200 g/mL of culture. When the light source was turned off, the ATP concentration dropped to less than 5 g/mL. After glucose was added in the dark, the concentration rose to 100 g/mL. Sparging the culture with nitrogen gas to remove the air caused the ATP concentration to again drop to less than 5 g/mL. Illuminating the culture under these conditions brought the ATP concentration back up to 200 g/mL.

What kind of organism could this be?

Solution

Photoorganoheterotroph

These microorganisms use light as a source of energy and organic compound as electron and carbon source.

Because when there was no Carbon source the ATP genration was in baseline when glucose supplied it increases the ATP genration means need organic carbon source other than Co2 means organoheterotroph.

And secend thing ATP genration is light dependent means Phototroph.
