Imagine that your friend rolls a number cube, but you cannot see what number it landed on. He tells you that the number is less than 4. Determine the probability that he rolled a 2. Explain your variables and how you found the probability.

Solution

P(event) = Number of favourable outcomes/Total number of outcomes

Favourable outcomes = 1 (getting a 2)

Total number of outcomes = 3 (either of 1,2 or 3)

Therefore the required probability = 1/3 = 0.33
