A 100 g ball moving to the right at 4.4 m/s catches up and colides with a 410 g ball that is moving to the right at 1.1 m/s. It the collision is perfectly elastic, what is the speed of the 410 g ball after the collision? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. If the collision is perfectly elastic, what is the direction of motion of the 410 C ball after the collision.

Solution

100 * 4.42 + 410 * 1.12 = 100 v12 + 410 v22

2432 = 100 v12 + 410 v22 -----------------------(1)

100 * 4.4 + 410 * 1.1 = 100 v1 + 410 v2

891 = 100 v1 + 410 v2

v1= 8.91 - 4.1 v2

substitute this in eqn (1)

2432 = 100 (8.91 - 4.1 v2)2 + 410 v22

2432 = 100 (79.39 +16.81 v22- 73.06 v2) + 410 v22

2432 = 7939 + 1681 v22 - 7306 v2 + 410 v22

2091 v22 - 7306 v2 + 5507 = 0

v2 = 2.39 and 1.1

v2 = 2.39 m/s
