During the process of glycolysis, phosphoglycerate mutase is used to convert 3-phosphoglycerate to 2-phosphoglycerate, and a reaction with enolase follows. Describe the result of enolase acting on 3-phosphoglycerate and how this changes the result. Why is mutase necessary to form pyruvate?

2 phosphoglycerate is dehydrated during the reaction with enolase. the active reaction site is the 1 and 3 position carbon.thats why it is necessary to shift the phosphorous group from 3rd crbon to 2nd carbon. and that work done by phosphoglycerate mutase.

enolase need mg++ ion to act in active site. and with the reaction of 3phosphoglycerate the last product will be the PO4- which will we loose the phosthate in the intermidiate stage and will not give the ATP so it was necessary to mutate the 3 phosphate glycerate.
