what is the significance of biochemical Tests.?

Solution

Biochemical Tests are performed mainly to investigate or asses a protein or enzyme activity in a sample.

The significance of biochemical test mainly lies on the screening of bacteria or differentiating a bacteria from the other. Structure of plants or animals can be distinguisehd with a naked eye, whereas Structural identification of bacteria internally or externally can be done using biochemical tests.

One example of such tests is Litmus milk test:

Litmus milk test can be used for distinguishing many species of bacteria.

The reaction requires Lactose(Milk Sugar), Litmus(PH indicator) and Milk Protein. This tests is mainly done to evaluate the potential of bacteria to metaboloze milk components and thus turning the litmus to colorless or white.

Experment on E.coli will produce pink color on litmus which is acid production. Similarly on other bactetia the test can be performed and a change in the litmus will help you identify different species of bacteria.

Other Biochemical Tests are: Oxidase Test, Urease Test.
