Solution

Wind shield area = 1.2 x 0.55 = 0.66 m2

Thickness of ice = 1.8 mm = 0.0018 m

Volume of ice = 0.66 x 0.0018 = 0.001188 m3

Mass of ice

m = density of ice x volume of ice

m = 919 x (0.001188)

m = 1.09 kg

Now, amount of energy required to melt the ice

Q = m x cp x deltaT

Cp = 2.1 x 10^3

Q = 1.09 x 2.1 x 10^3 x (0-(-8)

Q = 18341 J

Rate at which power is required P = Q/time = 18341/(5 x 60)

P = 61 J
