Calculate the height to which water will rise. Two clean and parallel glass plates, separated by a gap of 1.625 mm, are dipped in water. If sigma = 0.0735 N/m, determine how high the water will rise.

Solution

Given surface tension is = 7.35*10^-2 N/m

Separation betwen glasses = 1.625*10^-3 m

the weight of the water between parallel plates will be balanced by surface tension

w*h*d*rho*g = 2*w*sigma*cos A

where w is the width of the plates

d is the separation distance

for water against glass cos A = 1

Soling this equation gives

h = 2*sigma/(d*rho*g) = 2*7.35*10^-2/(1.625*10^-3*998*9.81)

h = 9.24*10^-3 m

h = 9.24 mm
