Is adaptive immunity engaged during both a primary and a secondary immune response? What about innate immunity? In other words, what is the relationship, if any, between innate/adaptive and primary/secondary immune responses?

Adaptive immunity is also called acquired immunity. Exposure to pathogens helps in activating adaptive immunity. The adaptive immune response though slower is much specific as it uses an immunological memory to understand about pathogen threats.

Adaptive immunity is engaged both during the primary and secondary immune response, though its action starts a little later, after the innate immunity, during the primary immune response.

During the secondary immune response, the memory cells of adaptive immunity are employed to elicit a faster response as compared to the innate immunity.

Innate immunity is percieves generalised threats and comprises of physical barriers, defense mechanisms (such as saliva, tears, bile, mucous etc) and generalised responses ( e.g.inflammation). It is active during both primary and secondary immune response.
