For the following guided essay on how eukaryotic DNA condenses to a chromosome, fill in the missing information where appropriate. Descriptions of the term or phrase needed to complete the missing information are sometimes shown in parentheses next to the blank. The arrows do not need information on them.

Solution

1 146 base pairs of DNA are wound around an octamer of histones with composition of amino acids. This structure is called Nucleosome.

2 Histones are rich in amino acids whose sidechains have positive charge which is important because DNA has negative charge. So the negatively charged DNA is wrapped around the positively charged Histone Octamer.

3 Approximately 30 million nucleosomes interact via sections of linker DNA to form a structure called chromatin.

4 Aided by an enzyme called RNA polymerase, the structures in box 3 forms loops around a central protein scaffold and the resulting structure is transcriptionally active euchromatin, which futhrer compact to form transcriptionally inactive heterochromatin.

5 The final condensed structure is called chromosome.
