What is the process of reverse cholesterol transport and how

What is the process of \"reverse cholesterol transport\" and how is it mediated? What are the some of the important molecular players in this process?

Solution

Reverse cholesterol transport is a process which results backward movement of cholesterol from liver to peripheral tissues.

non liver orginated Cholesterol is transferred by ATP-binding cassette transporter ABCA1 to HDL one of the component of HDL, Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA-1) acts as an acceptor. the phospholipid part of HDL works as sink for the transported cholesterol. LCAT (lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase)converts it to cholestryl esters .these esters are transferred, by CETP (cholesterylester transfer protein) to other molecules like LDL and VLDL, by exchanging of triglycerides.
