Explain why the final condition of the red blood cells differs from that of Elodea when placed in distilled water? What, if anything, happened, when you added distilled water to the crenated red blood cells? Why?

Solution

1. Elodea cells have rigid cell walls and the vacoules will abosrb the water after placeing the cells in distilled water and vacuole size will increase although it will not burst due to the rigidity of cell walls. But red blood cells after sometime will burst due to change in osmolarity, as water will diffuse into them.
