A pipe 4 inches in diameter and 6 feet 10 inches long is three-quarters full of water. If 1 cubic foot of water equals 62.4 pounds, what is the weight of the base of the pipe? Round to the nearest tenth.

Solution

Pipe is a cylinder with radius , r = 4 inch

lenght = 6.833 feet

water level = 6.833*(3/4) = 5.12 feet

Volum = pi*(r)^2(h)

= pi(2)^2(5.12) = 64.34 cubic foot

1 cubic foot = 62.4 pounds

So, weight of 64.34 cubic foot = 64.34*62.4 = 4014.80 = 4014.8 pounds
