Suppose that E and F are two events and that PE 04 and PFE

Suppose that E and F are two events and that P(E) = 0.4 and P(F/E) = 0.6. What is the probability of P(E and F)? 0.24 0.6 0.2 0.1 In how many ways can 12 athletes be awarded a first-place medal, a second-place medal and a third-place medal?

Solution

P(F/E) =0.6 and

P(E) =0.4

P(F/E) = P(F and E)/P(E)

Substitute and get

0.6 = P(F and E)/0.4

P(F and E)= 0.6(0.4) = 0.24
