In the hydraulic system shown in the figure(Figure 1). the piston on the left has a diameter of 4.5 cm and a mass of 1.9 kg. The piston on the right has a diameter of 12 cut and a mass of 3.1 kg. If the density of the fluid is 700 kg/m^3 what is the height difference h between the two pistons? Express your answer using hwo significant figures.

Solution

Set the pressures equal PL = PR

mL g / AL = mR g / AR + p g h

h = 1/p [mL / AL - mR / AR] = 1/p [mL / pi/4 DL2- mR / pi/4 DR2]

h = [ 4 / pi * p ] * [mL / DL2 -  mR / DR2]

= [ 4 / pi * 700 ] * [1.9 / 0.0452 - 3.1 / 0.122]

= 1.32 m
