Problem Statement 01 10 points A 345 feet tall steel moment
Problem Statement 01 (10 points)
A 34.5 feet tall steel moment frame building is built in Santa Fe, NM. Determine if the building is rigid or flexible in regard to wind load classification (Chapter 26 of ASCE 7-2010).
Solution
The fundamental period of the structure from ASCE 7 for a Steel Moment Resisting Frames (Special, Intermediate, Ordinary) is given by-
Ta=0.028*hn^0.8
Ta= .7728
The fundamental natural frequency comes out to be 1/Ta = 1.2939 Hz
Since the fundamental frequency is greater than 1Hz building comes under rigid category.
