Twice a first number decreased by a second number is 20. The first number increased by three times the second number is -4. Find the numbers. The numbers are (Use a comma to separate answers as needed.)
Solution
and, x + 3y = -4..................(2)
Solving by elimination:
6x - 3y = 60 |mutiplying first EQ by 3 to eliminate y
x +3y =-4
=> 7x = 56
=> x =56/7= 8
Putting value of x inequation 2
x + 3y = -4
=> 3y= -4-x= -4-8= -12
=> y= -12/3= -4
Therefore first number x=8 and 2nd number y=-4
