Operon is a funcitoning unit of genomic DNA. It contains a cluster of genes under the control of a single promoter. The major advantage of operon organisation in bacterial chromosome is that it leads to the synthesis of groups of functtionally related enzymes, usually from a single mRNA transcript. This advantage is due to cordinated regulation and production of functionally related genes. This advantage can also be related to the origin of operons which is through horizontal transfer and advantage of transferring complete sets of genes to provide a phenotype of the recipient bacteria.
