Bacteriophages and virus of eukaryotes organisms which include the Endogenous Retroviruses (ERVs) can be considered as good virus because they are beneficial to the host. The bacteriophages may be used to feed on certain infectious harmful bacterias. These phages are normally found in mucosal membranes thus residing in mucus of nose, mouth, genitals etc. The incoming pathogenic bacteria are invaded and combat operation is performed by these phages which protects the body. Also similar kind of phage therapy wherein bacteriophages are used to treat skin infections is used against acne.
These phages confer the antibacterial resistance.
ERVs have an evolutionary role in protecting the human fetus. They do so in many ways. Being the Retroviruses, the ERVs integrate their genome with the human genome as a result of which around 2-7% of human genome is of the viral origin. Retrovirus infection in reproductive cells can be passed on in generations as the ERVs. Such an infection is thought to be leading to viviparity in mammals which aids the developing fetus to survive mothers immune system. The ERVs most useful in this task are the Endosymbiotic ERVs.
During pregnancy these ERVs are initiated in high amounts when the fetus is implanted. These are immunodepressors, which shield the baby from its mom\'s immune system. They also secrete a few viral proteins which help in formation of the placental syncytium which controls the exchange of migratory cells between the embryo and the mother.
