Do you feel there is an emotional component to pain? Why or why not? Please complete this in at least one paragraph of a minimum of 4 sentences.
Solution
Yes, pain does have an emotional component, which has gained more attention recently. It has been defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. Organisms have system that determines the pain\'s location, intensity and characteristics such as aching, burning, etc; however there is also a completely separate system for the emotional aspect of pain and positive emotions such as feeling calm and safe, and connected to loved ones can minimize pain. Also, it has been studied that negative feelings of unpleasantness, anger and frustration can worsen the experience of pain. How our brain actually regulates the perception of pain with these emotions is still a subject of study? Studies have been done for treatment techniques specifically targeting anger and frustration to improvise patients in pain.
This might be because the physical pain and emotional pain activate similar areas of brain i.e.,the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex, thus both the pains have same neural signatures. Thus pain is both a physical and emotional experience.
