) Hormones are chemical messengers that control many different processes within the body. There are many different types of hormones and they have specific parts of the body that they can affect.
Explain how the kidneys vary the concentration of urine through water reabsorption in the collecting duct in response to antidiuretic hormone (also known as vasopressin).
Solution
Production of urine is not only useful for waste removal, but also a part of homeostasis which regulates blood volume.
Anti diuretics are the substances which decreases the urine volume and anti diuretic hormone (ADH) is an example of anti diuretics produced within the body. Upon stimulation, pituitary gland releases ADH and then act on the nephrons of the kidneys to cause a decrease in plasma osmolarity and an increase in urine osmolarity.
ADH enhances the permeability of water in the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct, which are usually impermeable to water. This causes increased water reabsorption and retention and ultimately decreases the volume of urine production.
