Solve the following system of equations algebraically y 4x

Solve the following system of equations algebraically. y= 4x + 1 y= x^2+4 Find the solution with the smaller x-value. x = y = (Simplify your answer. Type an integer or a decimal.) Find the solution with the larger x-value. x = y = (Simplify your answer. Type an integer or a decimal.)

Solution

y = 4x + 1 ....(1)

y = x2 + 4 .....(2)

equate both equation for value of y:

x2 + 4 = 4x + 1

x2 -4x + 3 = 0

(x - 3)(x -1) = 0

x = 1 or 3

then if x = 1 then y = 4*1+1 = 5

and if x = 3 then y = 4*3 + 1 = 13
