Describe the effectiveness of each of the following antibiotics with regards to controlling S. epidermidis based on your test results: • penicillin • novobiocin • gentamicin
Solution
Usually,Novobiocin is seemed more effective than penicillin and in comparison,Gentamicin was least effective than penicillin.S.epidermidis is a gram +ve organism and cephalosporins and penicillins are the first line therapy in methicillin sensitive organisms. Vancomycin, combined with rifampin or gentamicin, or both, is recommended for therapy of serious infections caused by methicillin-resistant strains.Novobiocin is an aminocoumarin which binds to DNA gyrase, and blocks adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity. It is active against Staphylococcus epidermidis and may be used to differentiate it from the other coagulase-negative Staphylococcus saprophyticus, which is resistant to novobiocin, in culture.Gentamicin is aminoglycoside antibiotic obtained from cultures of Micromonospora purpurea which is mainly used as adjunctive with various endocarditis. In short, i can say that it purely depends on the culture you selected aand the regional resistance patterns observed.
