1. Ferris wheel and sin functions (a through d)
2. Minute hand on watch
9 June 2016 1. Suppose you are on a ferris wheel (that turns in a counter clockwise direction) and that your height, in meters, above the ground at time t, in minutes, is given by 1)-18 h(,)-losin (a) How many meters above the ground are you at time t 07 (b) Your position on the wheel at time t 1 iso\'clock. (c) How many meters is the radius of the wheel? (d) If the ride takes you around the wheel 5 times, how many minutes does the ride last? 2. The minute hand on a watch is 0.5 inches long. How many inches does the tip of the minute hand travel as the hand turns through 219°? Round to 2 decimal places. 3. In the following figure, the coordinates of Pare (0.41, 0.91). (a) The angle =--o Round to the nearest whole number. (b) The angle # 0 Round to the nearest whole number. Solution
a) At t=0. 18 metres above the ground
b) When t=1, h = 16+18 = 34 m.
c) Minimum height =2 and max height = 34
Hence diameter = 32 and radius -= 16 m.
d) If the ride takes you 5 round, for one round t = pi/2/2pi = 1/4
Hence for 5 rounds time taken = 1/4 *2*5 = 5/2 minutes
