We can debate whether to call such transcendent anger neurotic, but neurotic is the correct modem term for Agamemnon. In Book 1 his megalomania leads to hubris (presumptuous pride, dishonouring others and/or the gods); in Book II his guilt over alienating his best warrior impels him to an irrational test of his men\'s devotion; in Book IX, with defeat impending, he first urges flight, then, acknowledging his previous madness, offers staggering amends. Books XIV and XIX reveal the same pattern: urge flight, accept rebuke, later confess and offer compensation. Priam, in contrast, is the idealized gentle father who accepts his son\'s\' need to fulfil themselves although the city may perish thereby; he is just the person to guide Achilles to the final act of love. And Patroclus is a simple, decent man who naturally wants to help the hard-pressed Greeks and merits Achilles\' affection.
