Here it is again: The Scrumptious sausage company makes two brands of sausage for vendors: SuperLean, using 3 kilos of meat and 2 kilos of fat per batch, and Regular, using 2 kilos of meat and 3 kilos of fat per batch. Each day the company has 800 kilos of meat and 600 kilos of fat available. How many batches of each brand should it make each day if it wants to use up all of the supplies? Now use the information in the table to obtain two equations in two unknowns: Solve the system above to obtain the values for the unknowns. Solution
Let x batches of superlean
and y bacthes of regular
So, superlean :meat -- 3x ; fat --- 2x
regular : meat ---- ;2y fat ---3y
Now 3x +2y = 800 ----(1)
2x +3y = 600 -----(2)
multiply equation 1 by 2 and equatiion 2 by 3:
6x +4y = 1600
6x +9y = 1800
-------------------- (subtract)
5y = 200 ---> y = 40 batches of regular sausage
x = (600-40*3)/2 = 240 batches of superlean sausage
