The Nobel Committee has asked you to write a summary of the CRISPR technology and offer your advice to help determine whether any of the scientists involved in the discovery of CRISPR methodologies and its application should be recognized by being awarded a Nobel Prize in the coming year.

a) In your response to the Committee, provide a brief (200-word maximum) synopsis of the CRISPR technology and its potential value to society in a form understandable to an educated scientific audience.

b) Explain, in detail, what specific advice you would offer the Committee about whether to award a Prize and who should receive it ([Use the recent Perspectives article by Eric Lander (Cell, 2016) as a starting point for

your reply and explain, in detail, reasoning for your recommendations. Remember that no more than 3 individuals can be awarded a Nobel Prize in a given year for the same body of work].

c) The President\'s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) has asked you to opine about whether a moratorium should be considered before funding CRISPR projects for use in human cells. Briefly describe your view(s)

Solution

a) CRISPR full form is \"Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats\", This is one of the gene editing techniques, recently in New York, this technique was used to treat blood cancer, they just edited the gene and treated that patient for the first time, it was cured and after that many Pharma companies showed interest on this technique including Pfizar, we can enhance the quality of nutrition in edible fruits through this technique, hence, this technique helps society in medical field and plant biology. It has prokaryotic immune system which enhances foreign genetic elements.

b) I think Mojica, Makarova and Zhang have should receive this award.

Firstly, Mojica did an excellent work on CRISPR technology, he did bioinformatics work too, he observed several CRSPR microbes and relation between CRISPR loci and adaptive immune system. Hence, we can tell that he has good obserbation which is very prominent in research field. I think he deserves for this award.

Secondly, Makarova worked much on this technology, he worked on cas genes, he discovered much more beyond immune system.

Fianlly, Zhang, he worked very well on this CRISPR technology, he worked on mammalian genome editing, it is great contribution to the world, his animal model was mouse. His aim was on inherited disease and somatic cancer and aslo he worked on different types of RNAs and DNAs, which are useful in this research, he one of the best scientists to receive this award.

c) While working with stem cells, they banned with embryos as they have life, and we do not have right to kill a life, depends on harm and benefits of society they should proceed for funding, but I am sure there will be more benefit if they will work more on it without harm.
