Solution

Glucocorticoids are released by the adrenal cortex. They influence the metabolic functions of the body and they also have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic effects. The major glucocorticoid released during the stress is cortisol.

Cortisol is also known as “stress hormone” due to its role in regulating the physiological functions during the stress.

The physiological functions of the cortisol include the following:

1). Cortisol regulates the blood glucose levels and prevents hypoglycemia

2). Cortisol is essential for the maintenance of blood calcium levels. If the blood calcium levels are low, it causes the release of bone calcium into the blood.

3). It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and increase gluconeogenesis.

The hyper activity of pituitary or adrenal gland causes excess secretion of glucocorticoids such as, cortisol and hydrocortisone, which causes Cushing’s syndrome. The symptoms of this syndrome include obesity, muscle weakness, moon face, hypertension, diabetes, and depression.
