Token passing takes place mainly in the network protocol called token ring. The computers here will be connected in a such a way that the signal passes from one computer to other in one logical ring and the working is as said below.

Since the computer are connected in the form of logical ring so imagine the data has to be transmitted from one system to another in that logical ring. So the concept of token passing comes into picture here. Imagine there is no information to be attached by one of the computers in the ring it will just pass the token to the next computer and if next computer has some data to be attached it will and again this goes on .
