Investment Casting: Wax is used as a pattern material

cement concrete is used as a mould material

The wax is melted out and molten metal is poured into the cavity where the wax pattern was.

Chill: to avoid the formation of void or shrinkage cavity the molten metal available at the non uniform areas has to be solidified before the uniform zones. This is possible by increasing the heat transfer from the non uniform areas. Heat transfer can be increased by increasing the thermal conductivity of the non uniform of the mould which is possible by placing high thermal conductivity metal piece at the non uniform areas . This is called chill.

chill metal must have as high thermal conductivity as possible and melting point of chill must be greater than the M.P of casting metal.
