This assignment involves using a network utility called “traceroute.”

The traceroute function can be performed from your personal computer, or using a web site. (On Windows, the command line program is “tracerte”)

Traceroute is a utility that allows you to trace the path through routers to a given host.   It is an IP utility.

Run a traceroute where the destination is two of your favorite web sites.

Turn in the output from each exercise, and a brief explanation of what it means (1 page total or less should be sufficient).

You probably will need to use the web and a search tool to gain a bit more knowledge.

Solution

Whenever we connect to a website, traffic goes via different intermediaries before reaching required website.It travles via local router, then through the Internet service provider’s routers, then onto larger networks, and so on.

Here comes the traceroute in picture which by name suggest that it will show the path followed to reach a particular site.And also whereevere there are delay each stop, and in case if we are having problem reaching a website and that website is up and running the traceroute shopws exactly where the problem is.

So whenever we do tracert xyz.com(anysite) it will show following

HOP RTT1 RTT2 RTT3 Domain Name [IP Address].

Hop : whenever a packet is passed between router ,its refered to as hop.

RTT : round trip time packet takes to reach a hop and back to the local computer and the traceroute sends three packets and each time we could see some response and if we are seeing * that means packet is lost.

Domain Name[IP Address] : Domain name could help identifying the location of the router but usually only IP address is displayed.
