Heat Transfer - ChemE Intro

A stream of bread dough is fed steadily through an oven in a large bread-baking operation. The dough enters the oven at a rate of 110 ft^3/hr and at a temperature of 70 degree F. It exits the oven at 400 degree F. Other properties of the dough include density = 58.7 lb_m/ft^3 heat capacity = 0.9 Btu/lb_m degree F At what rate is heat being added to the dough by the heating coils of the oven (in Watts)?

Solution

Q = m*Cp*(T2-T1)

here m = density * flow = 110*58.7 = 6457 lbm/hr

Q = 6457*0.9*(400-70) = 2150181 Btu/hr

here 1 Btu/hr= 0.293071 W

so it will be 2150181*0.293071 = 6,30,155 watts
