Describe the operation of a tubular bowl centrifuge
Solution
Tubular-bowl centrifuges are used for the separation of solid-liquid and liquid-liquid mixtures by sedimentation. In these centrifuges, feed is introduced from the bottom of the bowl. A baffle assembly in the bowl accelerate the feed to rotor speed. The baffle isolate the feed to two different layers, i.e. based on the components in the feed introduced; this can be two liquid layers or liquid-solid layer. The heavier components are present in the outer layer and it becomes concentrated against the wall, while the light components are present in the inner layer, floating on the top.
As the feed separates into layers, it travels up the bowl as an annulus. The top is located with overflow ports through which the liquid is discharged. Solid remains are recovered from the bowl manually.
