From a power dissipation perspective, what advantages were brought to the semiconductor industry by switching over from BJT technology to CMOS technology?
Solution
CMOS and BJT operate based on the input voltage and current. CMOS is a unipolar device where as BJT is a bipolar device.CMOS (Complementary MOS) is not a type of transistor. It is a topology that consists of an N channel MOSFET and a P channel MOSFET. An N Channel enhancement mode MOSFET turns on when a positive voltage is applied to its gate with respect to its source. A P channel MOSFET used in the CMOS topology turns off when a positive voltage is appied to its gate with respect to its source.
CMOS has a good performance parameters the power consumotion by CMOS is very small that is negligible where as BJT consumes more power when compared to CMOS and also the BJT is a low speed operating device compared to CMOS that is it operates very slowly compared to CMOS this makes the semiconductor industry by switching over from BJT technology to CMOS technology.
