Your task is to design an ultrasound system for breast cance
Your task is to design an ultrasound system for breast cancer detection. The minimum detectable tumor size must be 2 mm. You assume that this size is roughly equivalent to the wavelength in tissue. From an ultrasound databook you know that the phase velocity in breast tissue is roughly 1, 500 m/s. What center frequency is needed for an ultrasonic transducer to launch an acoustic wave capable of resolving the minimum tumor size? What frequency is needed to resolve 0.5 mm tumor sizes?
Solution
1. Given:
Phase velocity = 1500 m/s
minimum detectable size of tumor should be 2 mm
Center Frequency = velocity . (2/1000)m
=> Frequency = 1500 m/s x 0.002 m
=> Frequency = 3.0 s-1
Center frequncy to resolve 2 mm of tumor size = 3.0 s-1
2. Frequency need to resolve 0.5 mm tumor size
Frequency = (0.5/1000)m x velocity
Frequency = 0.0005m x 1500 = 0.75 s-1
