I know the shell method is not the most useful method but i need to know how to do both . the washer method is easy for this type of problem.
if R is revolved around the Y-axis, find the volume of the solid of revolution.
1a. y= x^2 x=y^2
1b. y= 4-x^2 y=1
if R is revolved around the Y-axis, find the volume of the solid of revolution.
1a. y= x^2 x=y^2
1b. y= 4-x^2 y=1
Solution
1)
V = integral of 2rf(y)......limit from 0 to 1
r = y, f(y) = y^2 - y
V = integral of 2y(y^2 - y)dy
V = integral of 2(y^3 - y^3/2)dy
integrating
V = 2(y^4/4 - 2/5 y^5/2)
apply limits
V = 2(1/4 - 2/5)
V = 3/10
similarly u can do 2nd part
