1.A line has equation y=x0.5.
a)Pick five distinct x-values, use the equation to compute the corresponding y-values, and plot the five points obtained.
B)Give the value of the slope of the line; give the value of the y-intercept.
2.A line has equation y=1.5x+1.
a)Pick five distinct x-values, use the equation to compute the corresponding y-values, and plot the five points obtained.
B)Give the value of the slope of the line; give the value of the y-intercept.
Solution
In general, the equation of any straight line, called a linear equation, can be written as: y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept. The y-intercept of this line is the value of y at the point where the line crosses the y axis.
1. Let the values of x be x=c(1,1.5,2.5,3,4)
Then y= y=x-0.5= c(0.5, 1, 2, 2.5, 3.5)
here, m=1 and b=-0.5. Therefore, the slope of the plot is 1 and the intercept value on y is -0.5.
2. Again, let the value of x=c(1,1.5,2.5,3,4).
Then, y=1.5x+1=c(-0.50, -1.25, -2.75, -3.50, -5.00)
Here, m=-1.5 and b=1. Therefore, the slope of the line is -1.5 and intercept is 1.
Note: I can not impot the plot here, because I don not that how to past in this page.
