Where is lysozyme found in your body and how does it help to combat bacterial infections?
Solution
Lysozyme is an enzyme which destroys bacteria. It is present in human secretions like tears, saliva, mucus and milk. It is present in high concentration in the lysosomes present in the neutrophils and macrophages. This enzyme acts by breaking the bonds between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine present in the petidoglycan layers of cell wall. The eyes are always bathed in tears which contain lysozyme and protects the eye from bacterial infections.
