Heat exchangers are devices that transfer heat from one medium to another.Heat exchangers are used in many industries like process industry, power plant etc.Heat exchager play a key role in the operation of a power plant. For example condensor is the heat exchanger used in power plants for converting the hot steam into its liquid state.So, the thermal effeciency of the power plant depends on the effectiveness of the condensor.

Heat exchanger performance can deteriorate with time, design operation and other interferences like fouling, scaling etc. So this directly effects the efficiency of the power plan.

Therefore there is a need to overcome the reduction of effectiveness of the heat excahnger to maintain the power plant efficiency the same.we can over come this problem by.

1.Energy capture from waste heat streams and using for heating the boiler combustion air will reduce the amount of heat suppllied to boiler.

2. Flue gases can be used to preheat the water supplied to the boiler.This reduces some amount of heat input to the boiler and maintaining the power plant efficiency constant.

3. If the reduction of effectiveness of heat excahnger is through fouling or scaling, the heat exchanger should be cleaned with some cleaning acids and maintained properly.

*Even the heat excchagers are designed to minimize the incidence of fouling, for one reason or the other there may be tendency to foul.It is important to consider some method for fouling control.

Common practice for control of fouling is to use chemical additives.Different additives reduce the problem by chemical or chemico-physical effects.
