Assume that a salesman predicts the sales for a particular liquid to be S = 750 – 42p , where p is the price per gallon set by the company. Suppose the company wants to sell at least 250 gallons in a month. To the nearest cent, what should the price be?
Solution
We have S = 750 - 42p where p is the price per gallon set by the Company and S is the Sales predicted by the Salesman. If the Company wants to sell 250 gallons of the liquid in a month, then we have 250 = 750 - 42p or, 42p = 750 - 250 = 500 so that p = 500/42 = $11.90 ( approximately, on rounding off to the nearest cent). Thus the price per gallon of the liquid is $ 11.90
