Let his speed be x mi/hr when he runs

So, while walking his speed = x- 6 mi/hr

Total time taken = 45min= 45/60 = 0.75 hrs

5/x +1/(x-6) =0.75

{5(x-6) +x}/x(x-6) =0.75

(6x -30) = 0.75(x^2 -6x)

-0.75x^2 + 10.5x -30 =0
