After instantaneously closing a valve located at the end of a steel pipe of 50 mm inner diameter and 8 mm wall thickness, it is measured an increase of pressure of 10 atm. Determine the water flow rate before closing the valve

Solution

Assuming no loss due to friction in steel pipe , all the velocity head converts into pressure head upon closing of the valve.

Therefore using bernoullis equation.

change in pressure   = 0.5 * rho * v^2

10 * 101.325 * 10^3   = 0.5 * 10^3   * v^2

v = 45.0166 m/s

flow rate   = pi * d^2 * v / 4    = pi * 0.05^2 * 45.0166 / 4   = 0.0884 m^3/s
