Give two reasons why normal hemoglobin and hematocrit values differ between males and females.
Solution
The following are the specific reasons why male and female have different haemoglobin and hematocrit values:
a) The sex hormone which is widely secreted in male known as testosterone is responsible for the stimulation of erythropoetin which inturn is secreted from kidneys. Erythropoetin is responsible for the synthesis of RBC\'s. As a result of which males have higher values as compared to females.
b) A considerable amount of iron loss occurs during the menopausal phase of females leading to decreased values.
