How does the human body utilize biotic and abiotic materials

How does the human body utilize biotic and abiotic materials? Describe the specific elements and compounds our bodies need.

Solution

There are many materials/factors that influence the human body. The factors is classified into two types:

1. Biotic material

2. Abiotic material

1. Biotic material: Bio means living organism. Human body utilises biotic material such as plants and animals for its survival.

Plants synthesis glucose from carbondioxide and water with the energy obtained from sunlight but Human body cannot do so. Human eat the plants/plants products such as vegetables, fruits to get glucose as it is very much needed for the function of the human body.

Human eat animals such as chicken, meat, fish, prawn etc and these food are rich in protein, calcium, vitamin B12, Omega-3-fatty acid, iron. The animal products eating human will get the large proportion of these nutrients when compared with the vegetarian. The iron is in non-heme form in plant products and in heme form in animal products. The heme form is more absorbable when compared with the non-heme form in human body.

2. Abiotic material: Abiotic means non-living. Human body utilises abiotic material, many abiotic material influences the function of human body.

Human body needs Water and cannot survive without it. 70% of the human body comprises of water and it is essential for the every cell, tissue and organ in the human body.

Human body utilise oxygen for the production of ATP which is needed for generation of energy. In human body, ATP is generated from carbohydrate, protein and fat catabolism, there is a need of oxygen in the process of oxidative phosphorylation.
