5. Recall the familiar problem of trying to predict the volumetric flow rate in a system where a liquid flows from a tank through a system of pipes (and say out to the atmosphere where the liquid level in the tank is given along with the pipe system geometry and loss characteristics (i.e., minor loss coefficients and friction factors as a function of Re Why would it be a much easier problem to know the flow rate and predict the liquid level in the tank than that associated with knowing the liquid level and predicting the flow rate?

Solution

Fluids are conveyed through closed conduits in numerous industrial processes. It is found necessary to design the pipe system to carry a specified quantity of fluid between specifiec locations with minimum pressure loss. The flow is controlled by

1) Pressure gradient

2) The Pipe diameter or hydraulic mean diameter

3) The Fluid properties like viscocity and density and

4) The pipe roughness.

When a fluid is flowing through a pipe, the fluid experiences some resistance due to which some of the energy of the fluid is lost and it effects the flow rate. This loss of energy is classified as Major Energy losses (due to friction) and Minor Energy losses (due to sudden expansion of pipe, sudden contraction of pipe, bend in pipe, pipe fittings etc).

Conclusion: While calculating the flow rate, we have to consider all the factors which effect the flow rate. Hence it is mandatory to consider all the geometry and loss chatacterstics, without considering the above factors you will not get the exact flow rate.
