Describe how we determine which letter will be used to represent a gene.

Solution

As far as gene is concerned, to denote a gene , mRNA sequence is used. Like DNA mRna is also made up of Nitrogenous bases, sugars and phosphate. Only difference being, Uracil is present as thymidine in the RNA in olace of Thymine. to determine letters, Initials of nitrogenous bases are used. Like A is used for Adenine, G is used for Guanine, C is used for cytosine and U is used for Uracil. Now, for gene expression, proteins are denoted. If one says, a gene is expressed, it means that gene is translated into a protein. To read the protein , set of three codons or set of three bases are read together. Like AUG codes for Methionine, CUC determines Lysine. Likewise, cfor every amino acid there is a three letter codon, which are the set of base pairs.
