Design a gear train with the input shaft 90 degrees from the output shaft, an input speed of 900 rpm and 20 hp, and a desired output speed of 10 rpm. What is the output torque?

Solution

for input shaft,

P=(2*Pi*N*T)/60

1 hp= 745.7 watt

therefore, 20 hp = 14914 watt

hence, 14914 = (2*3.14*900*T1)/60

T1 = 158.32 Nm

T2 = T1 * gear Reduction

here gear reduction is = input speed / output speed

= 900/10 = 90

Hence T2 = 158.32 * 90 = 14248.8 Nm = 14.248 KNm
