Certain practice habits continue to be used despite the availability of research and other forms of evidence that should be implemented to guide practice interventions. CPT is often prescribed for children with pneumonia, asthma, bronchiolitis, and atelectasis following surgery or mechanical ventilation.
Initial Discussion Post:
What is the expected outcome when implementing CPT?
What are the risks of performing CPT? Do the risks outweigh the benefits?
Is the practice of CPT supported by evidence? Are there safe, alternative interventions that the RN can implement to achieve the same outcome as performing CPT? If so, identify at least one (1).
Base your initial post on your readings and research of this topic. Your initial post must contain a minimum of 250 words. References, citations, and repeating the question do not count towards the 250 word minimum.
Solution
CPT stands for Chest Physiotherapy. This is generally used for treating respiratory diseases like pneumonia, asthma, bronchiolitis, and atelectasis. It involves chest clapping from both posterior and anterior sides enabling children to cough and remove the secretions like mucus.
Expected outcome in performing CPT: the main reason for performing CPT is to clear airways. Thus expected outcome is to remove the mucus present within the air passage to increase the respiration rate. It is noted in sound of one’s breath. It also incorporates postural drainage and vibration in which therapist places his hand on the chest and vibrates slowly by applying little pressure.
There are not many risks involved in this because it just involves mere clapping. But the therapist have to take care of the pressure with which he has to clap otherwise it can go wrong.
However risks outnumber the benefits of CPT as there is an improvement in respiratory rate and peripheral oxygen saturation after the performance of chest physiotherapy, especially in case of new-born children. But there is no sufficient evidence to support the statement. World health organisation however reported that CPT (chest physiotherapy) has helped to decrease severity, length of illness especially in case of pneumonia which is the main reason for child death in old times.
There are few safe alternatives other than CPT (chest physiotherapy) which have no risk involved and it includes making person cough rigorously to remove mucus and can position the patient in such a way as to decrease the amount of secretions in the children.
