Briefly discuss how fetal alcohol syndrome is related to carbohydrate metabolism.

Solution

Fetal alcohol syndrome in first trisemester is leading to teratogenic effects to the growing baby and metabolic products of alcohol in both mothers liver & fetal liver are leading to suppress carbohydrate metabolism. This is mainly mediated by the forming high reactive “H+ ions” (acidic) due to conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde followed by acetyl- coA. However, in pregnant stage with feat alcohol syndrome, NADH is going to produce signals to brain but liver failed to generate free glucose from “stored glycogen” under fasting conditions” result in inadequate supply of active glucose to fetal brain & mother’s CNS finally fainting due to hypoglycemia. A child with fetal alcohol syndrome has specific “learning and motor disabilities. Hyperactivity, low intellectual abilities, and low brain growth therefore, language production and the following stages of development will be impaired.
